Biovest International Inc., a developer of advanced individualized immunotherapies for life-threatening cancers of the blood system, announced it has launched the AutovaxID automated cell culture device for commercial sale.
AutovaxID is a reusable instrument that contains a fully-disposable, closed-system cell growth chamber. Inside the chamber is a hollow-fiber cell-growth cartridge, which replaces conventional stainless steel, glass and plastic cell-growth chambers. The advantage to the new design is that it requires almost no supervision and is less expensive to operate than its predecessor. The old design also occupied almost 10 times as much laboratory space.
The device is also useful for growing antibody-secreting cell lines, such as hybridomas and Chinese hamster ovary cells that are the backbone of commercial therapeutic protein manufacturing. Currently AutovaxIDs are in use at Biovest's National Cell Culture Center in Minneapolis.
Biovest International Inc. is based in Worcester.
