Worcester-based law firm Bowditch & Dewey LLP has named James D. Hanrahan as its new managing partner.
Hanrahan takes over for Louis M. Ciavarra, who is stepping down from the managing partner position.
Hanrahan has been a member of the firm's management committee for nine years and is also the administration manager of the firm's Framingham office.
Managing partners set the firm's strategic direction and manage its growth. Managing partners split their time between practicing law and managing the firm.
The firm has more than 60 attorneys and also has offices in Boston and Peterborough, N.H.
Hanrahan's practice includes land use planning, permitting, conveyance and commercial and retail leasing. He is also a director of the South Middlesex Opportunity Council Inc. and president and chairman of the Corporation for Sponsored Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Boston.
He lives in Framingham and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Boston College.
Ciavarra was managing partner, which is not a permanent position at Bowditch, for four years. He is still on the firm's management committee.
