Brewer will join UMass-Amherst faculty

State Sen. Stephen Brewer

Sen. Stephen Brewer of Barre is leaving the Legislature next month but will waste little time in finding new work.

The 26-year Democrat plans to join the faculty of UMass-Amherst, his alma mater, in January as a professor of practice at the Center for Public Policy and Administration.

John Hird, dean of the College of Social and Behavior Sciences, said in a statement that the center "plans a crucial role in the university connecting faculty research with policymakers and the public."

Since 2011, Brewer has chaired the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
"Students don't often get this kind of access to a veteran legislator," CPPA Director M.V. Lee Badgett said in a statement.

Brewer was elected to the Barre Board of Selectmen in 1977 and worked from 1980 until 1988 as an aide to former Sen. Robert Wetmore.
