Korean fried chicken restaurant bb.q Chicken opened its first location in Central Massachusetts at the former Bean Counter Bakery Cafe site in Shrewsbury on Saturday.
bb.q Chicken, which has existing locations in Boston, Lowell, and Quincy, will serve different flavors of fried chicken, tteokbokki, which are Korean stir-fried rice cakes, and several sides, including fries and dumplings. The fast casual restaurant is located at 288 Boston Turnpike.
“I first discovered bb.q Chicken when I visited one of the other locations, and honestly, it completely changed the way I thought about fried chicken,” Claire Chen, the owner of the new Shrewsbury franchise location, said in a Tuesday press release. “The flavors, the crispiness, the quality, it was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. It redefined fried chicken for me.”
bb.q Chicken was established in 1995 by its parent company Genesis bb.q in Seoul, South Korea, by Yoon Hong-guen, with a goal of bringing Korean fried chicken to the world.
The brand is recognized as one of the fastest-growing chains in the U.S. by Restaurant Business Magazine and is included in The Takeout's “11 Restaurant Chains to Watch in 2023,” according to its website. It has more than 3,500 stores in 57 countries.
Bean Counter closed its Shrewsbury location in April 2024, according to MassLive, instead focusing its efforts on its Worcester locations.
Along with Dave’s Hot Chicken and Cluck & Crispy Chicken, bb.q Chicken is one of the new chicken-related fast casual restaurants to open in the Greater Worcester area in the past two years.
