Volatility in the financial industry and a high level of turnover in the health care industry put the number of CEOs to depart their positions in October at 89, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
The international outplacement firm said the month's CEO turnover total was 15 percent less than the previous month and 29 percent less than October 2008.
So far this year, 1,028 CEO changes have been announced. That's down 18 percent from the same period a year ago.
But Challenger said although the rate of turnover has slowed overall, volatility is likely to continue within the upper ranks of the financial industry, especially as compensation for industry executives continues to be scrutinized.
Meanwhile, the health care industry saw eight CEOs leave their posts during the month, bringing the industry's year-to-date CEO turnover total 22 percent beyond the same period last year.
