Clark Grad Gives University $500,000

A member of Clark University's Class of 1948 has given the school $500,000 to establish an endowed education fund.

The gift provides for a permanent endowment for urban education at Clark's Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise. The fund will support research on the effectiveness of teachers in urban schools, the role of school leadership on educational performance and the welfare of children and families as it relates to school success.

The gift was made by Lee Gurel, who grew up in Worcester and graduated from Clark with a bachelor's in psychology in 1948. Gurel spent his career as a research psychologist with the U.S. Veterans Administration.

Gurel said he made the gift because the educated have a debt to repay to their schools for equipping students with tools "for enriching our lives."
