Cleaning up their act

Today marks the official launch of the New England Clean Energy Council, formed to help grow the region's clean energy economy.

The council will be headquartered in Cambridge. It was formed by the merger of the Clean Energy Council and the New England Energy Innovation Collaborative.

According to the council's data, clean energy is poised to become the state's 10th-largest industry. Statistics from the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust show the state's clean energy market already supports more than 14,000 jobs. The council aims to expand that market.

"The council will initially apply its efforts and resources to five focus areas: innovation, growth, analysis and education, adoption and public policy," said Annie Johnson, co-executive director of the council.

The council will be governed by a board made up of more than 20 clean energy company heads, university officials and industry leaders, including Scott Pearson of Southborough-based fuel cell manufacturer Protonex and Don Young of Northborough's Aspen Aerogels.
