Consumer Confidence Improves In August

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index hit 54.1 out of 100 this month, up from 47.4 in July.

Within the index, the present situation index scored 24.9, up from 23.3 a month ago and the expectations index improved to 73.5 from 63.4 in July.

The index is based on a monthly survey of 5,000 American households.

The Conference Board said the improvements to the index were mainly the result of consumers' "more upbeat" assessment of the job market. However, as long as earnings remain stagnant, "spending is likely to remain constrained," the board said.
