Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester is looking for opportunities to expand after a record number of students registered for the first day of classes last week.
According to the college, 8,025 students were enrolled in classes this semester. That's an increase of 17 percent over last year's fall semester. Four years ago at this time, 6,000 students were enrolled.
In a statement, Gail Carberry, QCC president, said the college is exploring opportunities to expand into the Blackstone Valley and Marlborough while also expanding its presence in downtown Worcester. QCC already has a satellite campus in Southbridge where 757 students are enrolled this semester.
QCC said its relative affordability and courses in popular fields, such as green technology, biotechnology and life sciences, are responsible for the growth. The college's online offerings have also been popular.
