Eric Guerin, Assistant Director of Social Media, JCSI

Guerin

Westborough-based recruiting company JCSI recently hired Eric Guerin as assistant director of social media. In this Q&A, he talks about being a trailblazer in recruiting techniques and focusing on his strengths.

Vital Stats:
Age: 37
Residence: Sutton
Family: Wife Leah, son Eliot and dog Adelie
Education: Bachelor's degree in visual communications from UMass Dartmouth
Previous job: Owner and executive producer at SmartMarket Media
Start date at new job: Oct. 5

Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. Great, I don't have a recruiting background so it has been fascinating to learn about the process step by step and to find out about JCSI's unique approach to staffing.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. My first task is to build a process utilizing social media for recruiting. It's never been done before so we are blazing new territory by engaging with passive candidates wherever they are online.

Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. Very different, as owner of SmartMarket Media I had to wear a lot of hats (i.e. accounting, sales, etc.) which were not all my forte. Here I can focus solely on what my strengths are: social media community building and creative content.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?

A. Well, when I was in high school the Internet wasn't really in operation yet and social media wasn't even thought of. So very different! That's the benefit of being able to adapt visual communication to whatever the latest trend in brand messaging is.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. Ted's Montana Grill is really good. The cafeteria in the building is pretty good too, but I usually "brown bag" my lunch.

Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

A. With how fast the world of online marketing and communications is changing, who knows? Personally, I will be encouraging my son to follow his dreams whatever they may be. Professionally, as long as every day I go to work I will be challenged mentally and creatively, I will remain energized no matter what the future may hold.
