Fewer Vacation Days Thrown Away This Year

As the recession begins to ebb and workers feel a bit more secure in their jobs, more people are likely to take vacations this summer. That's according to outplacement consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

The firm said even as hiring remains anemic, those who have jobs are less worried about keeping them. That means they may feel more free to take vacations.

During the worst part of the recession, many workers may have been reluctant to look like they had time to use their vacation days. And, because layoffs forced some people to take over former co-workers responsibilities, some really were too busy.

Challenger said the amount of vacation time being taken won't return to pre-recession levels, but it will be higher than in the last couple of years. And that means more consumer spending at tourist destinations, and more hiring by hotels, restaurants, shops and amusement venues.

Gas prices are also spurring people to travel since they are falling during a part of the year when they typically rise.
