HealthAlliance To Trim 50 Positions

HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster will cut about 50 full-time jobs across its two campuses and HealthAlliance Homehealth & Hospice in the face of falling patient volume.

The hospital, which is part of the UMass Memorial Health Care system, will make the cuts through layoffs, by not filling vacant positions and by cutting the hours of some employees across all departments.

The hospital has about 1,600 employees and 150 beds at campuses in Leominster and Fitchburg, as well as the HealthAlliance Homehealth & Hospice in Leominster.

Veronica Rosa, a hospital spokesperson, said patient volume at the hospital is down significantly.

"Co-pays are up, volume is down. People are being more choosy about what care they wish to receive," Rosa said.

Other factors that led to the decision to cut staff include reduced Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.
