Housing starts sport modest increase

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported the pace of new home construction rose 0.8 percent in March.

The March housing starts increase was below the increase the department reported in February. The small increase was also well off numbers reported last March.

The department said housing starts for March hit 1.518 million units compared to 1.506 units in February.

The department also said building permits rose by 0.8 percent in March to 1.54 million.
In March of 2006, the department reported housing starts of 2.1 million units.
