Human Service Workers Rally For Pay Hike

At a union rally at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Worcester this morning, human service workers, politicians and advocates for the disabled argued for a pay raise that they said would help reduce turnover at private, state-funded social service agencies.

The Service Employees International Union Local 509 is supporting a bill, H.B. 1863, that would give workers at agencies serving people with disabilities and mental illnesses a $2 per hour pay raise when they complete certain training. Supporters said that would protect agency clients from problems caused by high turnover rates.

"It takes maybe a couple of years for a client to truly open up to a caregiver," said Lewis Bell, a counselor at Community Healthlink in Worcester and member of SEIU 509.
