Marlborough-based fiber laser technology manufacturer IPG Photonics has hired a former medical device CEO for the newly-created position of senior vice president, global laser systems.

Mira Sahney has more than two decades of experience in leadership roles in industrial, medical, and high-tech markets, according to a press release issued by IPG on Thursday. She served as president of the pelvic health operating unit at Minnesota-based medical device firm Medtronic from 2021 to 2024.

Prior to that, Sahney served as president and CEO of Hyalex Orthopaedics, a medical technology firm headquartered in Lexington, from 2017 until 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mira to IPG’s leadership team,” Mark Gitin, CEO of IPG Photonics, said in the press release. “Mira’s cross-sector experience and operational leadership will be key as we expand our solution-based capabilities and pursue growth in strategic areas like welding, cleaning, micromachining, and medical applications.”

Sahney graduated with a bachelor’s degree from University of Michigan, a master’s degree from Stanford University, and with an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management Leaders for Global Operations program.

"IPG has a strong legacy in laser innovation and an exciting opportunity to expand its impact through complete, system-level solutions,” Sahney said in the press release. “I’m thrilled to lead our global systems teams to scale these capabilities and deliver technologies that drive value for our customers and push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Founded in 1990 in Russia, the firm moved its headquarters to Oxford in 1999 before later relocating its headquarters to Marlborough. The company sold off its remaining Russian assets in August, citing the impact of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

IPG acquired cleanLASER, a firm based in Germany, for $75 million in December.
