Ken Dec, a 25-year marketing veteran who has done work for companies like Pfizer, IBM and Bose, recently moved to Mercury Media Holdings, a Marlborough-based media agency. In his new job, he's responsible for helping big brands improve their media strategies.
Vital Stats:
Age: 49
Residence: Chestnut Hill
Family: Aspiring film-maker son Evan who graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston University and will be attending the exclusive Stark Film Producer's Program at the University of Southern California in the fall.
Previous job: Chief measurement officer, director of strategic planning at Partners + Simons Inc.
Start date at new job: March 30
Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. It's terrific. I'm working with very smart, focused people in a high energy environment. I love the buzz of the place.
Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?
A. How nice everyone is. People have been incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful in getting me up-to-speed quickly on all that we do for our clients.
Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. I look at them as opportunities more than challenges really. We have a great story to tell about the enormous, measurable business-building value that Mercury Media Holdings brings to its clients. It's my job to make sure we tell that story well to more of the right people.
Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. It's a little different as this role is more focused on the media aspect of communications. As a team we're helping clients intelligently allocate their money (given all the media choices they have) in ways that will drive direct, measurable revenue. That's very exciting.
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. There are some similarities. I started with aspirations in broadcast journalism, starting my career in radio news, and there aspects of this job that are similar: you need to be a highly effective communicator in many mediums, to be comfortable meeting and getting to know new people by asking smart questions and there is an aspect of "performing" in our business as you do a lot of presentations.
Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. I'm not fancy when it comes to lunch choices so I like nearby Five Guys Burgers and Fries- I'm a sucker for a great burger.
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. I'm on a number of not-for-profit boards (including the national board of Students Against Destructive Decisions and the board of directors of Community Servings) and love it. So in ten years I'd like to be in a position to focus full-time on my philanthropic pursuits.
