The Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center in Worcester has been recognized as one of 16 health facilities in Massachusetts that are leaders on LGBTQ inclusion, the health center said Wednesday.

The honor comes from the Human Rights Campaign, a Washington, D.C., advocacy group for LGBTQ rights. The group's Healthcare Equality Index measures health centers on staff training in LGBTQ patient-centered care, inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in patient and employee non-discrimination policies, and instituting policies aimed at eliminating bias and insensitivity, and ensuring appropriate and welcoming interactions with transgender patients.

Kennedy Health Center was one of 495 nationwide called an equality leader and the only such facility in Central Massachusetts. Kennedy's CEO, Stephen Kerrigan, is an openly gay man.
