Mass. gas prices drop 7 cents

Massachusetts gasoline prices fell 7 cents in the past week, settling at a new average of $4.93 per gallon of regular unleaded on Monday.

Despite the drop, the price is still 20 cents above where it sat at this time last month and $1.95 above this time last year, according to a press release from travel association AAA Northeast.

Nationally, average gas prices declined for the second week in row thanks to a global decrease in oil price from $110 to $107 per barrel. Oil demand has lowered in response to economic fear over a potential global recession, according to AAA.

“Fear is not a good reason to move a market like the one for oil, but it is a powerful motivator,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs, in the press release. "The cost of oil accounts for nearly $3 for every $4.89 at the gas pump. Consumers should find more relief when fueling up if oil prices drop further."

Massachusetts’s gas price is now 4 cents above the national average.
