Alain Chaoui, a primary care physician on the North Shore, has been named the president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, which counts 25,000 physicians statewide as members.

Chaoui was appointed at the group's annual meeting on Saturday and announced on Wednesday. He will serve a one-year term.

Chaoui, a Boxford resident, is the president of Peabody-based Congenial Healthcare, a private practice group with multiple sites on the North Shore. He alsoholds four teaching positions: as a professor of family medicine and public health at Tufts University School of Medicine, professor of family medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, clinical adjunct professor at Boston College's School of Nursing, and clinical professor in the School of Physician Assistant Studies at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Chaoui has served as chairman of the family practice department at the North Shore Medical Center's Union and Salem hospitals and was a member of the medical center's board of trustees.

The Waltham-based Massachusetts Medical Society has a mission to educate and advocate for physicians in the state and patients in Massachusetts and nationwide.
