Metro-Area Unemployment Rates Creep Down

The Worcester metropolitan area's unemployment rate, which is not seasonally adjusted, continued a steady decrease to land at 8.6 percent last month, compared to an 8.2-percent statewide rate, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Worcester's unemployment rate declined from 9.0 percent in February, and is down from 9.6 percent in March of 2010.

The Gardner-Fitchburg-Leominster metro area's unemployment rate dropped from 11.7 percent in March of last year to 10.9 percent this year.

In Framingham, the rate dropped from 7.1 percent last year to 6.0 percent this year.

Nationwide, 317 of 372 metropolitan areas in the country reported lower unemployment rates last month.
