Morgan updates 1923 Australian mill

Morgan Construction Co. of Worcester has signed a contract to replace two stands at a steel bar mill in Australia.

The stands were originally manufactured by Morgan in 1923.

The mill is run by Smorgon Steel in North Laverton, Australia. Smorgon is part of OneSteel, the largest steel producer in Australia.

Under the contract, Morgan will replace the two stands, gear boxes, spindles, rest bars, an air/oil lubrication system, roll change equipment and spares at the steel bar mill. The new equipment is expected to arrive in Australia in June 2008.

In a separate contract, Morgan will install a new pinch roll and laying head at a Smorgon steel rod mill. The new equipment is expected to be on-site in October 2008, and is able to produce steel rod at 100 meters per second, Morgan said.
