Murray to announce $2.1 million for garage

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray is expected to be at Union Station in Worcester this afternoon to announce $2.1 million in state support for the planned parking garage at the refurbished transportation hub.

Murray plans to hold a press conference to announce the funding at 4 p.m. today.

The 500-space parking garage has a projected cost of $21 million, according to the city's department of public works and parks. Site preparation for the garage is underway.

Union Station reopened in 1999 after major renovations costing $39 million. The station now serves more than 1,200 daily train passengers and more than 100,000 annual bus passengers, according to the city manager's office.

State and federal funding sources are expected to cover 80 percent of the garage’s cost.
