Number collecting unemployment falls

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time was 301,000 during the week ended July 14.

That's a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average of 318,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 7, and was unchanged from the prior week.

For the week ended July 7, the number of people collecting unemployment insurance was 2,571,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous week, according to the department.
