Otis Lands Trump Building Deal In Toronto

Farmington-based Otis Elevator Co. has won a contract valued at more than $10 million to provide elevators for the planned 60-story Trump International Hotel & Tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

When completed, the building will be the tallest residential building in Canada, according to a recent announcement from Otis President Ari Bousbib. It will feature 261 luxury hotel condominiums, 118 condominium residences, and a concierge-attended sky lobby on the 31st floor, Bousbib said.

“We have had a very successful history with Trump properties, and we are pleased that our leading technology and environmentally responsible products have been selected for this landmark project,” he said.

Trump International Hotel & Tower, Toronto, is a joint venture between Donald J. Trump and Talon International Development Inc.

Luxury Digs

“Located at the corner of Bay and Adelaide in the heart of Toronto’s financial district, the tower represents ultra-luxury living and features the only five-star hotel condominiums available for purchase in Toronto, Talon International President and Chief Executive Officer Val Levitan said. Toronto-based Zeidler Partnership Architects designed the building.

“We are proud to bring on board a worldwide leader like Otis,” Levitan said. “With its wealth of experience and innovative technologies, it is simply the only elevator manufacturer capable of matching the standards we expect for our property.”

Otis will provide a mix of its Elevonic 411 gearless, geared, and Gen2 elevator systems for the tower, Bousbib said. Otis claims that its gearless elevators are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than conventional drive systems, and that the Gen2 system is also 70 percent smaller than conventional systems.

“Otis is also providing its EMS Panorama system, a Web-based application that enables building staff to monitor, control, report on, and manage a full range of operational-critical elevator functions from any computer with an Internet connection,” Bousbib said. “With this system, building staff can monitor elevator performance, security, traffic patterns, key equipment events, and many other critical functions.”

Other Deals

The Canadian deal comes just weeks after Otis won a much larger contract worth $74 million with from ECE Europa Bau & Projektmanagement GmbH to supply and install elevators, escalators, and moving walkways for 19 shopping centers planned throughout Europe.

ECE Europa, a major developer of urban shopping centers in Europe, is developing the 19 centers in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine, Bousbib said. The majority of the units Otis will provide consist of escalators and Gen2 machine-roomless elevator systems, he said.

Otis Elevator bills itself as the world’s largest manufacturer and maintainer of “people-moving products” including elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. In addition to its headquarters in Farmington, Otis sells products and services in more than 200 countries and territories and maintains 1.6 million elevators and escalators worldwide.

Otis is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United technologies Corp. Over the past year UTC stock has traded between a low of $63.65 per share and a high of $82.50 per share.
