Email may lose its place of honor among workplace communication tools within five years, according to chief information officers surveyed by Robert Half Technology.
More than half of the 1,400 CIOs interviewed for the survey said real-time communication tools like instant messaging will surpass email in workplace popularity within the next five years.
Thirteen percent of the respondents, who were all from companies with more than 100 employees, said real-time tools will be much more popular than email, while 41 percent said they’ll become only somewhat more popular. Thirty-eight percent said they’ll be on par with email, and 7 percent said they’ll be somewhat or much less popular.
Robert Half said instant messaging-style tools offer benefits of speed, convenience and effectiveness for collaboration.
