Pending home sales in Massachusetts rose for the ninth month in a row in January in a year-over-year comparison, according to the Waltham-based Massachusetts Association of Realtors.
The number of single-family homes put under agreement in January was 2,846, up 39 percent from January 2011. Pending sales were up 1.9 percent from December to January.
Condo sales are also seeing continued signs of improvement, with 1,064 units under agreement in January, up 26 percent from a year ago.
MAR said a $25-billion settlement announced this week between five major mortgage lenders and 49 state attorneys general is a positive sign for the housing market. The settlement will bring nearly $318 million to Massachusetts to provide loan modifications and refinancing to some borrowers as well as cash payments to those whose homes were foreclosed upon and who suffered alleged mortgage servicing abuses.
