Raytheon Tests New Soldier Communication System

Raytheon Co. in Marlborough successfully tested a wireless networking system that gives mobile platoon soldiers wireless access to web-based services previously available only at fixed locations.

Working with the U.S. Army's Communications Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, Raytheon created the Enhanced Position Location Reporting System as the backbone of an over arching "network of networks."

As a result, platoons accessed e-mail, talked to one another, exchanged images and interacted with the Army's Tactical Ground System.

Previously, no secure infrastructure for such communication between military personnel existed, Raytheon, which is based in Waltham, said. The new system will provide soldiers with real-time, high-speed intelligence and communication that can be shared.
