Thanks to the federal highway stimulus funds, one major thoroughfare in Central Massachusetts will soon receive a much-needed refurbishment.
A 4.4-mile stretch of Route 2 between Harvard and Littleton is one of the eight projects described by Gov. Deval Patrick's office as needing "critical road resurfacing and traffic sign replacement."
All told, Massachusetts received approval from the federal government-under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-to spend $437.9 million on highway projects. The Route 2 project, along with seven other projects, represents an estimated $30 million. All eight will go out to bid through an RFP process starting tomorrow. Patrick's office predicts that approximately $153.2 million will be committed to "shovel-ready" projects within the next four months.
"These initial shovel-ready projects address the important basic road maintenance needs that were identified by our partners at the federal, state, regional, and local level," said Transportation Secretary James Aloisi Jr. in a printed statement. "We will put people to work making our roads safer this spring, and we are just getting started."
Looking toward the future, the state has one year to advertise any additional projects that are intended for funding by the federal government under this act.
