Saint V's Joins Environmental Health Initiative

Worcester-based Saint Vincent Hospital joined with nine major health systems in Washington, D.C. this week to urge other hospitals to adopt business practices that encourage environmental health and sustainability, the hospital announced.

The Healthier Hospitals Initiative is a national campaign that includes 11 of the largest health systems in the country, including Vanguard Health Systems, the owner of Saint Vincent.

The campaign has enrolled more than 500 hospitals and expects more than 2,000 to join over the next three years.

Practices pushed by the initiative include engaged leadership, healthier foods, leaner energy, less waste, safer chemicals and smarter purchasing.

Saint Vincent said it has already enacted practices that lower waste and reduce costs, including recycling 13 tons of cardboard per month and sending chemical waste out for fuel blending where possible.
