Joe Mullany, president and CEO of Vanguard Health Systems New England and Chicago markets, has been named interim president and CEO of St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.
Mullany takes over for John Smithhisler, who resigned from his post as president and CEO of the hospital early this week.
Mullany was appointed interim president by the St. Vincent board of trustees.
St. Vincent, along with MetroWest Medical Center, is part of Tennessee-based for-profit hospital operator Vanguard Health Systems.
The hospital is in the process of appointing a search committee to find a permanent replacement for Smithhisler. Mullany has been president and CEO of Vanguard's New England and Chicago markets since 2005.
Smithhisler had been president and CEO of St. Vincent for five years. After his departure was announced Monday, hospital officials said Smithhisler was offered another position with Vanguard, but turned it down and resigned.
