Massachusetts residents may now collect unemployment benefits for up to 39 weeks while seeking employment.
Gov. Deval Patrick authorized the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development to accept federal funds to extend unemployment benefits under a federal supplemental appropriations bill signed into law Monday. The bill allows for up to 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits beyond the 26 weeks offered by most states.
Massachusetts already offers up to 30 weeks of unemployment insurance.
Massachusetts will provide up to nine additional weeks of coverage to most workers in the state. Patrick's office said some workers who have already exhausted their benefits during the past year may also be eligible for additional weeks of unemployment benefits.
The extension goes into effect next week and will be good through March 2009.
The state Division of Unemployment Assistance will begin notifying potentially eligible claimants by mail Monday.
