State Loses 2,800 More Jobs In July

The state's unemployment rate crept up to 8.8 percent in July from 8.6 percent the month before as 2,800 jobs were lost, according to the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

In all, there are 109,400 fewer jobs in the state than there were a year ago. More than 102,000 of those jobs were lost between last September and April of this year.

In July, the leisure and hospitality sector gained 3,900 jobs, the most of any sector during the month on seasonal demand that has provided hotel and food service jobs since April.

Other sectors added fewer than 1,000 jobs during the month while manufacturing lost 1,900 jobs and state and local governments lost 2,000.
