State System To Track Municipal Energy Waste

The state has launched a web service designed to allow municipalities to track energy use in public buildings more easily.

The state Department of Energy Resources said the MassEnergyInsight service is now available for each of Massachusetts' 351 cities and towns. The service provides towns with information on electricity, gas and oil usage, as well as emissions data, and allows local officials to see which buildings and departments are wasting energy.

With that information, towns take a step toward qualifying for state Green Communities grants. One of the five criteria for the grants is the establishment of a "municipal energy baseline" and a program to reduce that baseline by 20 percent within five years.
