Still River Makes First Small Proton Accelerator

Still River Systems in Littleton claims to have extracted a proton beam from the world's smallest proton therapy accelerator.

The company hopes the accelerator will be used to treat cancer.

The system uses a focused proton beam of radiation to treat tumors, which the company says reduces the damage radiation can cause to surrounding parts of the body.

The company announced a successful proton beam extraction from the first production unit of the accelerator.

The system is being installed at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
