The TJX Cos., Inc., headquartered in Framingham, on Wednesday announced plans for a global expansion and acceleration of its environmental sustainability goals, with plans to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 2040.

Along with net-zero emissions, the parent company of retailers like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods hopes to source 100% of its operations with renewable energy by 2030 and divert 85% of its operational waste from landfills by 2027. The new plans call for a 100% shift to recyclable packaging by 2030, according to TJX’s Wednesday press release.

The commitments build upon environmental impact goals TJX began developing in 2020. The company’s previous goal was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by fiscal year 2030, based on the emissions in 2017. TJX will continue using its 2017 emissions as a guideline when reporting on its goals going forward.

“I am so pleased with all we have accomplished over the years, and we are by no means done. These new environmental sustainability goals are important to us in terms of our work to mitigate our impact on the environment,” Ernie Herrman, TJX CEO and president, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to enhance our programs and reporting as we move forward.”
