Ultra-thin cables carry 50 percent more power

In tests, a cable made of 33 hair-thin superconductors was able to transmit enough electricity for 250,000 homes, according to Westboro-based American Superconductor Corp.

The cable was made by Nexans using American Superconductor's wire, and was tested in Hanover, Germany.

The amount of power the cable was able to transmit is 50 percent more than conventional cable.

American Superconductor said it expects to begin producing the new cable in December. The company expects the new cables to be put to use first in major metropolitan areas where demand for electricity is growing and straining existing power grids.
