The University of Massachusetts Amherst has been named one of the country's best long-term values by SmartMoney magazine.
The magazine ranks 50 colleges based on the cost of attendance and students' earning power after graduation. UMass Amherst ranked 18th and ahead of Harvard, Yale and other preeminent institutions.
SmartMoney considers what graduates earn in their early careers compared to what they paid in tuition and fees in college. The result is a "payback ratio" for each school. UMass Amherst's payback ratio is 152 percent with a median salary of $46,600 three years after graduation.
UMass Amherst graduates were also found to be making a median salary of $88,200 15 years after graduation. This year, tuition and fees for in-state undergraduates at UMass Amherst is $10,232.
With a median salary of $49,700 three years after graduation, Texas A&M ranked No. 1.
