Two UMass Medical School researchers and Waters Corp. of Milford have received a share of an $8.3-million Massachusetts state grant to advance breast cancer imaging technology.

The funding, announced by the Worcester school on Sept. 2, will go to Dr. Gopal Vijayaraghavan and Mary Rusckowski, two associate professors of radiology who are collaborating on the project with industry partners on breast cancer imaging technology.

Waters' and UMass Medical School researchers' work were two of 11 projects receiving a total of $8.3 million from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, a state investment agency for the industry.

Rusckowski will work with UMass Lowell researchers and Bowing Medical Technologies, a medical clinic in Belmont, on breast cancer detection using advanced medical technology. Vijayaraghavan will do similar work with Deep Health, a Cambridge medical technology firm, with an aim at improving breast cancer diagnosis using artificial intelligence in mammography screenings.

Waters Corp., a Milford firm that makes lab equipment, is pairing with a Boston University professor, Joseph Zaia, on developing new analysis techniques and software to create more effective influenza vaccines.
