Unexpected employment growth for March

The country's employment picture unexpectedly continued its improvement last month, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Labor.

U.S. non-farm payrolls rose by 180,000 in March, above almost all forecasts, and the unemployment rate slipped to 4.4 percent from 4.5 percent in February, the labor department said.

This matches the jobless rate in October, which was the lowest in nearly six years.

The figures came in above the estimates of Wall Street economists who had forecast a payrolls gain of 168,000 and a jobless rate of 4.5 percent.
