Worcester co. faces fines for 2006 chemical spill

Worcester's TI Logistics Inc. and a closely related warehousing and storage company face $157,500 in fines and thousands more in other penalties after a poorly-driven company truck with "inadequate brakes" rolled over on I-95 in New Haven, Conn., and spilled styrene into New Haven Harbor, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency .

The truck crashed Sept. 5, 2006 and spilled between 4,000 and 5,400 gallons of styrene, a hazardous chemical, according to the EPA. Between 200 and 500 gallons of the chemical flowed into storm drains and into New Haven Harbor. After the spill, the company failed to take proper measures to mitigate the spill and notify authorities, the EPA said.

Federal, state and local authorities cleaned up the spill. The Connecticut Department of Transportation found that the driver of the truck had failed to keep the tanker in the proper lane, and was driving with inadequate brakes.

According to the EPA, TI Logistics faces a penalty of up to $157,500, and could be charged $32,500 per day for violations of the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act.
