Worcester County sees 30 new coronavirus deaths Wednesday, surpasses 8,000 cases

On Wednesday, Worcester County recorded 30 new coronavirus deaths after Tuesday's lower numbers, and new cases surpassed 8,000, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health data.

Following what seemed to be a drop in coronavirus deaths, Worcester County went from two fatalities Tuesday to a large spike Wednesday bringing the total death count to 489. Statewide, deaths increased by 174 bringing the overall tally to 5,315.

Worcester County’s had 282 new cases, up 4% from Tuesday, bringing the total to 8,241. Statewide, total coronavirus cases surpassed 80,000, with a surge in numbers after Monday and Tuesdays drop in cases. Massachusetts reported 1,165, or 1%, new cases contributing to the 80,497 cases Wednesday.

The Department of Public Health reported 8,536 new coronavirus tests given and 410,032 overall.

The city of Worcester recorded a 3% increase of 79 new cases adding to the total 3,082.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester report 250 cases with 98 patients in intensive care. The two hospitals have had 193 total deaths to date, and five new employees have tested positive bringing the total to 264.

Metrowest Medical Center in Natick and Framingham report a total of 70 confirmed and suspected cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reports 39, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Other Central Massachusetts hospitals such as Harrington Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and HealthAlliance in Leominster report 40 suspected or confirmed cases. In total, between these hospitals, there are 33 suspected and confirmed cases in the ICU.

The DCU Center field hospital in Worcester reported 10 patients on Wednesday.

Throughout the nation, there are almost 1.4 million cases and 83,715 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there are over 4.3 million cases, and over 297,000 deaths.
