Wrestling With A Slow Job Market

Two former wrestlers from St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury have started a new networking web site to help building contractors and other self-employed people find work.

John Goss said he and Jason Bakanowski, both 2002 St. John’s graduates who finished college in 2006, started localsidework.com after talking with contractor friends who were out of work and looking for ways to make money. The site allows “jobbers” to sign up for free and chose from more than 60 types of services to offer, including carpentry, dog walking, landscaping and accounting. The workers pay a $3 fee only when an employer sends them a bid and they accept. The entire process is free to employers.

Goss said the site is different from the popular contractor site Angie’s List in that it is designed for individuals doing side jobs rather than formal companies. And, unlike Craig’s List and other job listing sites, it lets employers and jobbers rate each other.

Goss said the partners financed the site themselves with the help of a loan, and they hope to add advertising soon to get more revenue.
