101: Headshot Prep

Most career coaches say having a professional headshot on your LinkedIn or Twitter profile, or your company website can help get you noticed. Maybe you have a headshot on your corporate “About Us” page already, but it’s from 1982 — you’re sporting feathered-back hair — and it’s time to update. Either way, we think you’ll find these tips picture perfect:

Look professional, but personable. If you’re leaning toward having your corporate headshot taken in a boardroom with your arms crossed, don’t. Experts say your goal is to look polished, but accessible. “Look at your picture and ask yourself: ‘Would I want to go to lunch with this person?’ ” career counselor Miriam Salpeter says in an article by Eve Tahmincioglu on msnbc.com.

Keep up appearances. Stay away from trendy clothing or jewelry that could look dated in a few years. For both men and women, darker colors like navy or grey are good choices. Women should keep accessories simple; men should stick with a muted tie pattern, advises HeadshotPhotographerMatch.com. Aim for fall or winter clothing rather than summer wardrobe selections, the site suggests. Still can’t decide? “Bring two different changes of clothing to the photo shoot and ask the photographer for advice,” the site recommends.

Timing is everything. A blog entry at GowinPhotography.com in Springfield, Ill., recommends waiting a few days after a haircut (it will look more natural) and scheduling your photo shoot in the morning. “You'll feel more energized and typically have fewer things on your mind,” the blog says. Also, get lots of rest the night before, avoid salty foods — which can make your eyes puffy — and refrain from alcohol.
