$13.5M Navy Contract For Robot Maker

Bedford-based iRobot Corp. has been awarded a $13.5 million contract to make bomb-detecting and disarming robots for the U.S. Navy.

The contract comes from the Naval Sea Systems Command in Indian Head, Md.

With the robot, explosives technicians can detect, identify and disable explosive devices from safe distances. According to iRobot, it will be particularly effective in dealing with improvised explosive devices.

iRobot has already delivered more than 2,500 of the bomb-detecting machines to the military.
