2014 40 Under Forty: Jessica L. McGarry

Assistant Vice President/Business Lending Officer, Webster Five Cents Savings Bank, Worcester

Residence: Worcester

High school: Doherty Memorial High School

Colleges and degrees earned: Bachelor’s degree in business, Nichols College

Career highlights: First person at Webster Five to be promoted from the branch network into commercial credit, then from credit into business lending. Co-founded the Central Mass. Young Professionals networking group. Chaired the Webster Five United Way Campaign committee in 2011, and achieved a 90 percent employee participation rate.

Community involvement: I've had extensive involvement with the United Way of Central Massachusetts, serving on various committees and volunteering through the Women's Initiative. Also, I recently organized a few women in my department to participate in Habitat for Humanity's “Women Build” program, preparing a Worcester home for a single mother and her children.

Ultimate career goal: A leadership position in which I can mentor others.

Non-relative you admire most: My best friend, Jenn. She approaches life with such a lighthearted and easygoing grace, qualities I value and try to emulate.

Favorite book: “The Dark Tower” series, by Stephen King

Hidden talents: I'm really good at untangling knots, and can count to 10 in Japanese.

“If I were to win $1 million in the lottery, I would … buy a vacation home near the ocean.”
