Donahue thought he was a long shot when he initially applied to lead Old Sturbridge Village two decades ago. He had no museum experience; his background was in the world of charter schools and institutes. But even though he was unqualified on paper, a search consultant thought he would be a good fit, and the board of trustees agreed. Donahue has now been the leader of the Northeast’s largest living history museum for about 20 years.
Over the years, Donahue said, he’s had a lot to be proud of. The museum launched a Christmas by Candlelight program, which has grown year over year, and its carding mill wheel has been restored with historical precision. A new barn is under construction, thanks to the support of donors. New pieces like a playable Chickering and MacKay Square grand piano made in Boston in 1839, and a portrait of Rebecca Howe Fiske, who lived in Lexington during the first battles of the American Revolution, have enhanced the museum’s collection.
The museum is preparing for 2026, the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, with programming to enhance its educational offerings and link history to the present day. This summer, an international public art exhibit called CowParade will be held at the museum.
