Twenty-two businesses in MetroWest have been named to an annual list of the fastest growing companies in the nation.
And according to business leaders from those companies, there is one distinguishing factor that has allowed their companies to grow during this economic downturn: hard work.
Take Mark Altman, for example, founder and president of Mark Altman & Associates, a printing and billing company in Hudson that works mostly with public entities to handle payment collections.
"As a whole, the printing and mailing industry is not on great footing," Altman concedes. "For us, we've indentified a niche of working with municipalities, governments and utilities because we know they are always going to have a need to send out a bill, either in paper or electronic form. And we're booming."
Such is the case for many businesses on the Inc. 5000 list, including those in MetroWest.
The List
Altman said one of the keys to growing his business through the economic slowdown has been to avoid complacency.
"One area that is crucial for a good business in a bad economy is hustle," he said. "You have to work as hard as you can."
In the past three years Altman's business has grown 136 percent to $4.8 million in revenue, according to Inc Magazine, which publishes the list. The company has about 25 employees in its Hudson offices, where Altman also lives.
It's the second year the company has made the Inc. 5000 list; this year it appeared at number 1,893.
And getting recognized by the magazine is welcomed.
Since the company first appeared on the list last year, Altman said he has fielded calls from investors from around the country: businesses from around the nation looking to partner with his company and new clients that have heard about his service.
"It carries some weight," he said.
The magazine ranks privately held, for-profit U.S. businesses earning more than $2 million in revenue annually and ranks them based on three-year revenue growth, as reported by the businesses.
