$500K Grant For Worcester's ECI Biotech

ECI Biotech of Worcester has been awarded a $511,472 grant from the National Institutes of Health's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

The Phase II grant is from the institute's General Medical Sciences program and will fund ECI's development of a hand-held diagnostic tool that detects infection in chronic wounds.

The tool is called ExpressDetect and is intended to relieve physicians of their reliance on physical signs and symptoms to determine whether a wound has become infected.

ECI was founded in 1998 by Mitchell Sanders, its current CEO. The company is also developing a sensor for urinary tract infections and an advanced wound care system that provides early warning of emerging infections and promotes healing.
