IPG Acquires Alabama Laser Firm

Oxford-based laser maker IPG Photonics Corp. has acquired Photonics Innovations, a privately held laser products manufacturer based in Alabama.
Photonics Innovations was established by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and makes lasers and laser equipment for the scientific, biomedical, technological and other industries and allows IPG to expand into new lines of business.
Photonics Innovations makes what are known as middle infrared lasers that are used in optical sensing instruments and for the rapid sensing, identification and quantification of materials.
IPG makes fiber lasers used in heavy industrial applications.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
