Hartford-based Aetna has been selected by Fortune magazine as the most admired company in the 2008 insurance and managed care health care category.
The magazine ranks companies in various industry sectors in eight categories, and bases that ranking on evaluations performed by industry peers. Aetna achieved the highest overall ranking among its peers by placing first in people management, quality of management, quality of products/services and use of corporate assets. It ranked second in innovation, social responsibility, financial soundness and long-term investment.
"This ranking is a tribute to the quality and hard work of our employees, who put the people who use our services at the center of everything we do," Ronald A. Williams, chairman and CEO of Aetna, said in a statement.
A total of 622 companies in 65 industries were surveyed. Apple was ranked the top company overall. The list will appear in the March 17 issue of Fortune.
